That One-of-A-Kind Christmas Gift

December 25, 2011. Christmas Day. While everybody else anticipated receiving their gifts from their wish list, I on the other hand, received quite an unexpected present.

I got out of bed, sleepily walked to the bathroom and was already on my way back to my room when I heard my cousin screaming: “Blood, blood!”

I looked at her with confusion. I don’t see anything. She got my silent message and pointed towards my pajama bottoms. And there it was. Red. Bright red.

I ran to the bathroom and refused to go out. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t even know how to properly put a pad on, but I had asked my cousin to run to the store to get me one.

Fifteen minutes later, I knocked on my parents’ bedroom door to wake my mom and tell her the news. She smiled and said to me: “Congratulations, you are officially a young lady, it’s time to start acting like one.”

For the rest of the day, I was anxious about how I was going to deal with the following month’s red days and how I was going to do to be ‘lady-like’ now that my childhood has officially ended with my period.
